Brominated epoxy resin is an important branch of the epoxy resin family, which introduces bromine atoms into its molecular structure, thereby endowing the material with excellent flame retardancy.

1. Electronic, Electrical, and Semiconductor Industry (Core Application Fields)

This is the largest and most important application market for brominated epoxy resin, mainly used for manufacturing printed circuit boards (PCBs).

Printed circuit board (PCB) substrate: Brominated epoxy resin, especially tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) type epoxy resin, is the main flame retardant material for manufacturing FR-4 substrates (a glass fiber reinforced epoxy resin laminate). 

The vast majority of electronic products such as computers, mobile phones, and home appliances use FR-4 substrates for their PCBs. It provides excellent mechanical strength, 

electrical insulation, and crucial flame retardancy, ensuring that electronic products will not ignite or burn in the event of short circuits, overheating, and other faults.

Semiconductor packaging material (encapsulation material EMC): Brominated epoxy resin is used as one of the main components of encapsulation material in the packaging process of semiconductor chips, used to wrap and protect fragile chips and lead frames.

Its flame retardancy can prevent chips from becoming a source of ignition due to overheating, ensuring the safety of end products.

Electronic component packaging and coating: used for insulation packaging and protective coating of electronic components such as transformers, capacitors, inductors, etc., providing insulation, moisture resistance, and flame retardant protection.

2. Aerospace and Transportation

This field has extremely strict requirements for the weight, strength, and fire safety of materials.

Aerospace: A matrix resin used for composite materials in aircraft interior parts such as wall panels, ceilings, luggage racks, seats, etc. 

Strict aviation flame retardant standards (such as FAR 25.853) must be met to maximize passengers' chances of survival in the event of a fire.

Rail transit: used for the interior, flooring, seats, etc. of high-speed trains, subways, and bullet trains. Its flame retardant and low smoke toxicity characteristics are crucial for ensuring passenger safety in enclosed underground or high-speed operating environments.

Automotive Electronics: With the increasing level of automotive electronics, brominated epoxy resin substrates are widely used for PCBs of automotive electronic components such as engine control units (ECUs), 

information entertainment systems, and battery management systems (BMS).

3. Building Materials and Fields

Although the usage is not as high as in the electronics industry, it is still indispensable in certain specific situations.

High rise buildings: used in composite materials, coatings, and adhesives that require high flame retardant ratings.

Power facilities: Insulation equipment, high-voltage switches, insulators, etc. used in substations require materials with excellent electrical performance and flame retardancy.

Fireproof coatings and adhesives: used as additives or matrix resins to prepare coatings and adhesives that provide fire protection for substrates such as steel and wood.

4. Other fields

Household appliances: Control boards for washing machines, air conditioners, microwave ovens, and other appliances commonly use FR-4 PCBs.

LED packaging: Some LED packaging materials may use modified epoxy resin, which may also contain brominated epoxy resin to provide flame retardancy.

Important supplement: Regarding environmental disputes and future trends

Although brominated epoxy resins (especially reactive TBBPA type) are widely used, their environmental issues have always been a concern.


Controversy focus: Bromine based flame retardants may produce toxic and carcinogenic substances such as dioxins and furans during combustion. Although the exudation of reactive brominated epoxy resins (such as TBBPA chemically bonded to the polymer backbone) is much lower than that of additive brominated flame retardants and is considered relatively safe, the risk of high temperature or incomplete combustion cannot be completely avoided.


Regulatory restrictions: Environmental regulations such as the EU's RoHS Directive (Directive on the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment) restrict the use of certain brominated flame retardants (but currently the application of TBBPA in polymers has not been completely banned).


Substitution and Innovation: Therefore, the industry has been actively developing halogen free flame retardant (HFFR) alternatives, such as epoxy resins for flame retardant systems such as phosphorus based, nitrogen based, and inorganic hydroxides (such as aluminum hydroxide). 

Especially in high-end electronic products such as smartphones and laptops, the application of halogen-free boards is becoming increasingly common.
